Department of Labor Has Finalized Overtime Rule – What Does That Mean for My Institution?

After much discussion and anticipation, the Department of Labor has finally issued the rule that will raise salary limits for overtime exemptions.  The rule “Defining and Delimiting the Exemptions for Executive, Administrative, Professional, Outside Sales, and Computer Employees,” which was proposed in September will require colleges and universities to either raise employees’ pay or pay overtime.  At a time when many colleges and universities have to closely watch every single penny in their budgets, this increase of nearly 65% for the salary threshold could be a significant deterrent in how monies are spent at these institutions.  There is less than a year to come into compliance, so what can member institutions do to be prepared for this deadline and to ensure compliance?
